Demystifying Depth of Field (aka DOF)

Digital Photography Tip
Practice shooting with different apertures and study the results on the computer to learn how depth-of-field affects your photos. Getting the DOF right can make a photograph beautiful.

You will find that a smaller depth-of-field (smaller f-stop number) focuses all the attention upon your subject. This is great for taking a picture of your child, the dog, or your dear wife - subjects stand out against a blurry background.

Likewise, you will find that a greater depth-of-field (bigger f-stop number) will make everything from here to eternity appear in focus. This will help make landscapes fascinating and lovely.

Here is an online DOF calculator.
